Fülszöveg
This volume features papers presented at an
international symposium on headache and mi-
graine held by the World Federation of Neurology.
Recent data and concepts were contributed by
world leaders in the field of headache research
and treatment. The volume also records discus-
sions and includes an extensive bibliography.
Papers present information supporting a number
of important theories. These include the possible
role of central and peripheral supersensitivity to
monoamines in idiopathic headache including
migraine. Other contributors consider the cere-
bral vasospasm, vasodilatation and pain of head-
ache as secondary responses to the same
pharmacologically active humoral agent respon-
sible for the decrease in MAO activity, which
might belong to the thromboxane family. The
rise in plasma levels of linoleic acid is considered
as possibly responsible for the platelet serotonin
release observed during a migraine attack; at

rise in plasma levels of linoleic acid is considered
as possibly responsible for the platelet serotonin
release observed during a migraine attack; at
the same time, it may also serve as a source of
>
increased prostaglandin Ex synthesis, which has
a powerful vasodilating effect.
Other important topics include the significance
of 'dialysis headache', the ability of certain
weather phases to trigger headache, the use of
the CAT scan in migraine patients, and the as-
sociation of anxiety and depression with head-
ache. The treatment of headache receives prac-
tical coverage through a report of the findings of
a migraine clinic in a major city.
With its variety of expert information and
interpretations, the volume offers insight for
neurologists, physicians and researchers who
need to see what the latest research has contrib-
uted toward improved treatment of headache.
