Fülszöveg

When one of the most beautiful places on earth comes before the lens of one of the world's finest photographers, there seems little need for words. In this magnificent book, Dennis Stock offers a visual paean to the Hawaiian Islands with 157 brilliant color photographs, produced in a lavish formát, accompanied only by the few lines needed to name the places pictured. Stock roamed the islands for many months, with no program in mind other than to search for images that delighted his eye. He made no attempt to teli a story, to visit historic places, or even to discover new and unfamiliar vistas, although many of those things can be found here. Rather, Stock had a desire to drink it all in, to respond to, and capture with his camera, the broad panorama of Hawaii s landscape as well as intimate moments of visual pleasure-from the sweep of light on a surf-washed lava shore to the glint of color in a full-blooming flower. People appear in Stock's photographs, but largely as incidental to the landscape: it is the natural scene that principally engages his attention. Here, people seem as much of the land as on the land-somehow connected with nature, whether tending their gardens, riding the waves that ceaselessly pound the coast, or dancing in age-old ceremonies rooted in the cycles of the seasons. Presented here is a kaleidoscope of Hawaiian life, consisting of myriad details that combine to form a vast mosaic of a stunning physical environment and the life it supports. Few visual artists have the power to capture the diversity and magnitude of Hawaii. Dennis Stock has done just that in this breathtaking volume. 157 photographs, all in color Vissza
