On a map of the world, the Hawaiian archipelago appears as tiny dots in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. Together, however, these tropical islands form the 50th State of the U.S.A., a state that prospers from tourism and the export of sugar and pineapples.
Many hundreds of years ago, courageous and skilled Polynesians discovered and settled the islands after crossing the Pacific from their previous homelands in large, double-hulled canoes. Today, canoeing is still a favourite sport, but for the visitor there are also the attractions of surfing and deep-sea fishing and, of course, simply sunbathing all year round on palm-fiinged beaches.
