UNEQUAL PARTNERS A Compamtive Analysis of Relations Between Austria and the Federal Republic of Germany and Between Canada and the United States
edited by Harald von Riekhoff and Hanspeter Neuhold
Rielations between unequal partners in the international system have rarely been analyzed in ail their primary dimensions or in a comparative perspective. The chapters in this book focus on two relationships between unequal partners: Austria and the Federal Republic of Germany, on the one hand, and Canada and the United States, on the other. This study deliberately creates a reversed asymmetry by presenting the van -ous issue areas from the viewpoint of the subordinate rather than that of the dominant partner. This approach helps redress the customary neglect of the less-powerful states at the expense of an understandable preoccupation with the policies of major international actors such as the United States and the Federal RepubUc of Germany. The authors are Austrian and Canadian specialists in their respective fields .
Harald von Riekhoff is professor of political science at Carleton University in Ottawa, Canada. Hanspeter Neuhold is professor of international law and international relations at the University ofVienna in Austria and director of the Austrian Institute for International Affairs.
