THE GREAT MIGRATION
The Movement of Peoples across Europe, ad 300-700
This remarkable book presents a broad, panoramic view of a complex period of history - the vast movements of peoples across the crumbling Roman Empire from the fourth to the eighth century and their impact upon Western Europe. This is a period not often covered in detail by historians, and the author's mastery of the subject and his masterly treatment of it make this a valuable contribution to the shelves of student and general reader alike.
The first two chapters analyse the internal weaknesses of the later Roman empire, at the same time describing both reforms which came too late to save the West and defensive strategies which failed to counteract the barbarian pressure. The central chapters describe the actual invasions, making sense of the complicated movements of peoples like the Alans, the Huns, the Goths and Vandals, the Franks and the Anglo-Saxons, the Lombards and the Thuringians.
Two further sections explain the culture and society, the literature and philosophy of these peoples, while a brief final section covers the movements of the later migrants - the Arabs, Berbers, Slavs and Normans. A chronological table and clear end-paper maps make the events described easy to follow.
The text is supported by over 140 photographs, many of them in colour, of artifacts and archaeological finds, and 40 explanatory drawings. The whole provides new insight into the coming of the Barbarians and the so-called 'Dark Ages' that followed.
