The miniature world of dolls and dolls' houses has always held a special fascination not only for children but also for adults; and collecting the exquisite dolls and the finely detailed dolls' houses of past centuries is now a rapidly growing pastime. Here is a colorful introduction to the history of dolls, which have been known in some form to almost every civilization. It also covers the comparatively recent development of dolls' houses, which were originally simply cabinets made to display beautiful miniature objects.
Many different kinds of dolls, such as the wooden dolls Queen Victoria dressed and the exquisite Jumeau dolls, are illustrated, together with some of the most interesting dolls' houses of each period, including one that contains some of the work of Chippendale. Patrick Murray, Curator of Edinburgh's unique Museum of Childhood, has written a foreword to introduce this absorbing subject.

Why make a doll when such a variety of good-looking dolls are readily available in stores? Because to make your own doll is a unique and rewarding craft easily performed by anyone. And the results are certain to be treasured more than any mass-produced item.
With patterns, diagrams, photographs and complete instruaions, the authors of this book show you how to make a multitude of dolls, from the simplest stuffed-stocking type to fully-jointed professional-looking dolls. You can knit dolls, sew dolls, carve dolls, assemble them from foam rubber, or model them from a plain putty-like material that hardens when dry. Either soft-or firm-bodied dolls may be made fully mobile. Another day, another doll.
Once you have begun construaing dolls, you will not be able to resist the challenge of making more and more complex dolls. Special sections of the book on facial and body proportions will enable you to add artistic touches to your work.
