Gyula Ortutay, President of the Hungárián Folklor© Society, Vicepresident of the International Folk Narrative Research Society, university lecturer, member of the Hungárián Academy of Sciences and of the Finnish Academy of Sciences, an MP and a Minister, and a Member of the Presidential Board of the Hungárián Government, presents a selection of the most important essays of his forty years' career as a folklorist and an educational politician. With this two-pronged interest he has studied peasant art and the relationship of folklóré and society. The manifestations of individuality and community in folk art have received as much emphasis in his works as did the questions of modern educational policy: to enable the children of workers and peasants to attain the highest possible educational standard has been one of his main endeavours.
