Pécs is a 2000-year-old city with a Mediterranean atmosphere and a rich cultural heritage.
It is a World Heritage city where every century has left its indelible mark. Pécs, the capital of Baranya county, lies 200 kilometres south of Budapest, close to the Danube and Drava rivers. It is situated on rising ground at the southern foot of the Mecsek Hills.
Today its inhabitants number 170,000, and its rapid growth over the past decades has made it one of the country's largest cities. This development has stemmed from a number of factors: the mining of
coal and mineraJs; the city's univer-sities, colleges and theatre; and, last but not least, its favourable geo-graphical location and its veiy pleasant Mediterranean climate.
