( ^ Európa Institut Budapest The Europe Institute Budapest was founded in 1990, with the aim of promoting Hungary's integration into the EU. The Institute wishes to help scholars to keep pace with scientific and cultural developments in Europe, to harmonize Hungárián and European interests, and to provide other Europeans with insight into Hungary's past and recent history, its economic and political system. The Institute wishes to help scholars to keep pace with scientific and cultural developments in Europe, to harmonize Hungárián and European interests, and to provide other Europeans with insight into Hungary's past and recent history, its economic and political system. The Institute considers establishing and developing professional and personal co-operation among the young, new generation of European and Central European intellectuals as its priority. In the years 1990-2000 the members of the Scientific Council included Kari Otmar Freiherr von Aretin (Mainz), Ferenc Fejtő (Paris), Alois Riklin (St.Gallen), Andrei Ple§u (Bucharest), Arnold Suppan (Vienna) and from Budapest Ferenc Glatz (chairman), Domokos Kosáry, Ferenc Mádl, Károly Manherz, Lajos Vékás. The Institute focuses on research in the following areas: 1. European Integration and Hungary 2. The national, political and economic conflicts of East Central Europe 3. The comparative history of Europe To achieve its goals the Institute - organizes conferences, symposiums and lectures, - publishes scientific studies, - and offers scholarships to young and senior researchers. The Institute is located in the House of Professors at 19-21 Ajtósi Dürer sor, in the 14lh district of Budapest. Besides the offices and conference halls there are apartments for professors and single rooms with bath for graduate and postgraduate students in the building. The scholars meet every week at the Institute's Workshop called 'Kaffeerunde', where they give account of their work, debate studies and discuss work-related issues. The professors and the representatives of students hold board meetings on a weekly basis, where they discuss current matters concerning scientific work, publishing and other organizational tasks. The regular yearbook of the Institute (Begegnungen, Crossroads) has been published regularly since 1994 in Germán and English. The working language of the Institute is Germán (the only Germán language institute of this kind outside the Germán speaking areas), but English, Russian and French are alsó used. The Institute awards scholarships to researchers with an advanced degree, under the age of 40, who work in areas which relate to the research fields of the institute. The Institute alsó welcomes senior scholars, who wish to carry on research in Hungary or work as visiting professors. Their tasks - beyond their own research - include delivering lectures and holding seminars. Scholarships are 1-3 months long on average, longeronly in exceptional cases.
