PRADO
THIS Guide offers a survey of the enormous number of paintings housed at present in the Prado. For the information of visitors and art scholars alike it lists both the works on show in the exhibition rooms and those that are temporarily kept in the Museum's storerooms. Following the traditional arrangement of the Prado, these works are divided in this Guide into schools of painting, which are studied separately, together with the individual artists and styles, in order to offer the visitor a precise and coherent survey of this magnificent art collection. The Guide is based on the Prado's latest catalogues and other works published in recent years by art specialists.

ONE of the most important works undertaken by King Charles III to urbanize the capital of Spain was a new layout of the so-called Prado de San Jerónimo or «St. Jerome's Meadow» which stretched over an area comprising the gardens of the former monastery of the same name as well as | those of the Buen Retiro Palace, a favourite promena-| ding spot for the population of Madrid at the end of the 18th century. The great Neo-Classical architect íJuan de Villanueva (1739-1811), the most interesting I figure in 18th-century Spánish architecture, was com-missioned to carry out this project; at the king's wish he designed the Botanical Gardens, the Astronomical Observatory and in 1785 began work on a magnificent [building, the present-day Prado.
