publícly opened IjO years ago, on Septemher 25,1855. Since then the Dresden pictures have been mentally coupled with Semper's architecture. Building work was commenced in 1847 and was conlinued substantiaily according to the architect's plans even though he had to llee from Saxony after his active participation in the May revolt of 1849. Semper's Gallery, a building with neo-Renaissance forms, closes the north side of the Zwinger, faring its festive and exuberant 18th century architecture with a moulded facade. The other front of the Gallery forms part of Theaterplatz, one of Europe's fínest squares, which with the Royal Palace and Court Church, Schinkel's Guardhouse and Semper's famous Opera House, is flanked by magnificent buildings.
