In its French edition, Guerrillas in Power has already stirred an international controversy about the nature of socialist revolution in this latter part of the twentieth century and about the relations between the Soviet Union and other socialist countries, which the Russians appear to view as mere client states, with the main purpose of serving the ends of the Soviet Union. Fidel Castro, whose attempts to reform the government of Cuba, even whose apologists admit was among the most corrupt in the world, was impelled by American intransigence to fall back upon aid from the Russians—aid that in almost all cases had attached to it the strings of economic and ideological dependence on the Soviet Union. In this book, K. S. Karol objectively examines the series of circumstances that forced Castro to form a Communist state, dependent on the U.S.S.R., when his actual intent had been to establish an independent socialist government.
Karol demonstrates here how Castro was made to acquiesce in the invasion of Czechoslovakia and to give public support to that action, to which he was, by the nature of the government he had himself tried to establish, firmly opposed.
