Combining most other arts, film-making has become increasingly popular in recent years as an activity that offers a very wide variety of interests to a number of different people. Amateur and semi-professional groups now flourish in many parts of the world; and schools in particular have been quick to see the potential of an art form that fully involves more skills than drama and can provide even greater educational possibilities in its choice of subject matter. Interest generally has been stimulated by the growing availability of cheap equipment, the spreading of information and the wider circulation of classical and experimental films. Yet, until now, no book has appeared which has specifically dealt with group film-making considering all its aspects. Robert Ferguson provides this much needed practical introduction; he encourages groups to explore and discover their own talents and limitations through constant experiment with film-exercises. He encourages the all round film-maker who is versed in the language of film rather than the specialist in one field. He covers ail aspects of editing, script-writing, shooting, directing and acting in detail. There is advice on lighting, sound synchronization, effects, how to choose a subject as well as how to present convincing reality whether in documentary, fiction, fantasy film or simple incident. Advice on semi-professional techniques are included where these apply to specific films. The book is illustrated throughout from both amateur and commercial films and there is a full section on technical equipment. It is an ideal guide for those seeking basic information on the techniques of film-making. Robert Ferguson trained as graphic designer and specialist art teacher and for the last two years he has held a Research Fellowship in the film department at Hornsey College of Art. His work in film-making began with children and he now trains students in techniques of documentary film-making to a professional level. Vissza
