THE WORLD OF ART
Creek Sculpture
The Archaic Period John Boardman 481 plates
For most people there is no more satisfying expression of Greek art than its sculpture. Its influence, through Rome and the Renaissance, is felt to the present day. It was the first, the only ancient art to break free from 'conceptual' conventions for representing men and animals, and to explore consciously how art might imitate nature or even improve upon it. The first stages of this discovery, from the semi-abstract, beginnings in the eighth century BC to the fuller awareness of what was possible in representational art of the early fifth century, are explored in this handbook, which is designed for the art lover, art historian and classicist. It describes the development in terms of styles and regions, tracing foreign influences and defining the contribution of native genius. It also provides a more comprehensive range of pictures for this period than any other modern monograph, of any price,... Tovább

It also provides a more comprehensive range of pictures for this period than any other modern monograph, of any price, presenting many unfamiliar or rarely reproduced statues and assemblages. It is a companion volume to the author's handbooks on Athenian Black Figure Vases and Athenian Red Figure Vases: The Archaic Period and further volumes are planned.
John Boardman is Lincoln Professor-Elect of Classical Archaeology and Art in Oxford. He has spent several years in Greece, three of them as Assistant Director of the British School at Athens, and he has excavated in Smyrna, Crete, Chios and Libya. For four years he was a Fellow of the British Academy. Mr Boardman has written widely on the art and archaeology of archaic Greece - on excavations, on the date of the Knossos tablets, on Greek Burial Customs (with D. C. Kurtz), on Greek gems and, in the 'World of Art Library', on Greek Art.
On the cover: Head of a Kore from the Acropolis, Athens (Acr. 696). see pi. 157. Vissza
