The new FONTANA UNESCO pocket art series will be a complete library of world art. All the illustrations will be specially photographed and the texts will be by leading authorities. Encompassing art treasures of all countries, the series ranges from the earliest primitive cave paintings to works by contemporary painters.
GREEK SCULPTURE
The art of the Greeks has had a deep influence on the development of European civilisation, and it still seems very close to us today. Yet Greek art, like all others, was bound closely to the society that produced it.
These sculptures from the Museums of Athens range from the earliest Mycenean masks wrought in gold, to the heroic sculptures of the Hellenistic age. Their essentially religious quality is often overlooked. Just as the temple, dwelling place of the gods, formed the highest task of the architect, so a religious statue had to embody the artist's vision of the divine.
