GREECE IN COLOUR
Photographs by R. G. Hoegler Introddction by Lord Kinross Text by C. Kerenyi
GREECE—there are the overtones of the greatest intellectual seduction in the history of man in that single name. Thousands of writers and poets have attempted to define the subde attraction of Greek thought, the insidious infiltration of this tiny country into the minds of western man. All illuminate, for an instant, some particular facet: the shadows, perhaps, of a golden age or the faint notes of Aristophanes' laughter. The effects of the explosion of the Renaissance are real and fresh, as generation follows generation in succumbing to die fascination of Greece.
Here, however, we are concerned with the land itself, with the colours of Greece; the violent white of the sun, the sudden blue of sea and sky, the vital black of the shadow and the robes of Orthodox priests, these are the living backgrounds of the past ') of legend and temple.
No black and white photo.-I graph can capture the light of Greece or the brilliant enchantment of the seas of Odysseus. Here then in the work of the late R. G. Hoegler is Greece in colour, 57 magnificent colour photographs that seem to have imprisoned the incandescence of land and sea, the ecstatic whiteness of ruined temple against the rich blue of the sky. This is the authentic land, empty promontory, church, temple, the magnificent commonplace of Greece today. Professor Kerenyi in his text explores the peculiar character of Greek light and its effect on some of the great literary figures of the past.
Lord Kinross contributes in his Inuroduction his own dimension to the extraordinary atttacuon of the land of Greece. Together, word and picture pay a distinguished tribute to a beautiful country which has exerted its peculiar magic unfailingly through the centuries.
