Great Expectations
Written towards the end of his hfe, Great Expectations reflects Dicken's changing attitude towards society. As he traces the fortunes of his hero Pip Pinip from optimism to disillusion, Dickens ej^ibits a strong vein of cynicism and increasing doubts€s to the possibility of improving society or even life itself.
But this novel, considered one of his greatest, contains some of his most deeply felt and memorable scenes and most brilliantly drawn characters. Through his portrayal of Pip, Dickens was able to express, much more fully than in any other book, the passions and anguish of his own character: as Orwell said, psychologically the latter part of Great Expectations is about the best thing that Dickens ever did!
