Even the prayer of petition that boils up from somé agonizing personal need includes, if it is authentic, a stated belief that "God's will be done" -an expression of our utter dependence on God's mercy. "To bless whatever there is, and for no other reason but simply because it is, that is what we are made for as humán beings," says Dávid SteindlRast. "Whether we understand this or not matters little. Whether we agree or disagree makes no difference. And in our heart of hearts we know it." This book is about prayer and about gratitude. It is alsó about awareness, and our ability to see into things, discovering the grace that awaits us in everyday life. When we bless things simply because they are, we live life in its fullness. Dávid Steindl-Rast has written a book that must not only be read, but ought to be read again and again as we discover the intermingling of our reality and God's grace. It contains a simple message, but like all simple sounds it can reverberate in our hearts, constantly enriching and enlightening us. It is a book to cherish. Brother Dávid Steindl-Rast, O.S.B., has written several books on the contemplative life and has given lectures in the United States, Europe, and Asia. Born in Vienna, he studied art, anthropology, and psychology there, holding degrees from the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts and the University of Vienna. In 1953 he joined the Benedictine monasteiy of Mount Saviour in Elmira, N.Y. He has been involved in monastic renewal in the United States and in the dialogue of Orientál and Western spirituality.
