Advertising today has become so much a part of our daily lives, and so complex in its manifestations, that we need an occasional pause for thought about it: about what it has so far accomphshed, what recent progress has been made, and what the advertising practitioner in one land might borrow to advantage from his confreres in another.
Graphis Annual, which has been an institution in advertising for the last fourteen years, again attempts to present the world's best work by applying stringent criteria of selection, and in this way to strike an arc between designer and advertiser. It is the only annual of its kind to give detailed and accurate captions in Enghsh, German and French. The 963 items illustrated in the volume—102 of them in colour—are by 500 artists and designers and were chosen from over 12,000 entries from 34 countries. The preface to the fourteenth volume of Graphis Annual has been written by Herb LubaHn, one of America's leading designers, who demands more independence for the creative individual.
