The Grand Hôtel is not a hotel in the ordinary sense-it is an institution, a historical oasis, a hotel that has come to play its acknowledged role in the life of the capital.
Ever since it opened in 1874, the Grand Hôtel has stood for classical elegance, quality and style.
If we were to catalogue all the events that have taken place at the Grand Hôtel, they would make a long and varied list. Competitions in "pretend" guitar are held there as well as diplomatic return banquets for visiting statesmen. The Swedish Royal Family visits the hotel several times a year on more or less official occasions.
That is as it has always been: the Grand Hôtel was opened by King Oscar II. When the hotel was still under the direction of its builder and founder Régis Cadier, he was certainly there on many occasions-as he was during the memorable era when it was under the direction of Wilhelmina Skogh, the "Grand Old Lady of the Grand".

In the second week of December, the Grand Hôtel truly becomes one of the "Noblest" places on earth. Since 1901, the hotel has formed an integral part of the Nobel festivities. The laureates and their families stay at the hotel and hold their press conferences there. And all the guests who so desire are wakened on 13 December by Lucia and her train, arriving to serve them breakfast in bed.
In this major book on the Grand Hôtel we follow the history of the hotel in words and pictures from the 1870s, when the idea of building Sweden's first major hotel first took form, right down to our own times, when the famous summer veranda-the "Poor Man's Veranda"-has at last been converted into a year-round restaurant.
