'I fancied myself transported back into bygone ages as I entered the giant baronial hall ' wrote Prince Piickler-Muskau of a visit to Warwick Castle in 1826. He was expressing the romantic medievalism that gripped so many men and women of taste through the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. This sensibility, and the reaction to the classicism of the eighteenth century that it embodied, was to find its greatest expression in the architecmre and design of the Gothic Revival.

This book is a visual delight and essential reading for all those interested in architecture and design. It covers the influence ofthe Gothic style, not only through the work ofthe great designers such as Burges, Pugin, Viollet-Ie-Duc and Wyatt, but also through many lesser-known figures. The worldwide influence of the Gothic Revival is amply demonstrated in the large selection of illustrations showing wall, floor and window treatments, as well as furniture. An invaluable source of ideas, this book illustrates much new material and celebrates an important chapter in the history of design. Vissza
