gormenghast is the second of a mag-
nificent trilogy of novels about the
House of Groan. As the volume be-
gins, Titus Groan, a child of seven, is
now the seventy-seventh Earl of Gor-
menghast, a strange kingdom set upon
a huge, mist-shrouded mountain. With
his father's mysterious death, the ritual-
laden atmosphere of the kingdom has
been subtly but irrevocably disrupted.
The agent of change is Steerpike, who
plotted his way up from the royal
kitchens to the influential position of
Master of Ritual. Driven by an all-
consuming ambition to rule the House
of Groan, Steerpike's schemes become
more and more fiendish, as he secretly
initiates deeds resulting in madness,
horror and death.
Only Titus stands in his way to tri-

Only Titus stands in his way to tri-
umph. As the young Earl approaches
manhood, he longs to be free of the
meaningless burden of his hereditary
responsibilities in order to explore the
world beyond the margins of his realm.
But when Steerpike's true nature is
laid bare, Titus fully assumes his role
as Earl and responds to the threat of
treachery, to emerge victorious, yet
still possessed with but one thought —
escape. At the book's end, he rides out
of Gormenghast, his mother's pro-
phetic words still ringing in his ears:
"There is nowhere else. You will only
tread a circle . . . for everything comes
to Gormenghast."
A powerful work of art, the Gormen-
ghast trilogy may be considered myth,
adult fairy tale or a metaphor of the
human condition. C. S. Lewis has said:
"Mr. Peake created a new category,
- the Gormenghastly, and we wonder al-
ready how we did without it and why
no one defined it before.'1 Elizabeth
Bowen has written: "One of those
works of pure, violent, self-sufficient
imagination that are from time to time
thrown up . . . poetry flows through
his volcanic writing; the lyrical and
monstrous are knotted in his scenes, in
the arabesques of his prose." Vissza
