Juan Carlos Onetti is the most outstandiiig Uruguayan prose writer of our time. Best known for a cycle of novéis about Santa María, an imaginary town on the Río de la Plata, his work bears a strong affiníty to the Yoknapatawpha novéis of William Faulkner, whom he greatly admires. This newly translated collection, Goodbyes and Stories, highlights fiction outside the Santa Maria cycle, giving English-speaking readers access to a much greater range of Onetti/s work.
Goodbyes is one of Onetti's most perfect stories.
