There are few people today-even among those who have had the benefit of an intensive education-who are not sometimes at a loss for the right word to express their exact meaning, and who do not get entangled in sentences that are not only badly constructed, but may actually fail to express the requisite ideas. This book discusses too the diffieulties of the written language-punctuation, spelling, the writing of business letters, etc. The reader is invited to learn by considering the errors of others, and the text is illustrated by many quotations in which there is a flaw; somé examples are alsó given for the reader himself to criticise (answers are provided). Of this book, and the author's Better English (alsó specially written for PAN Books), The Times wrote: ". . . his best and wittiest handbooks. Both are delightful reading, not only for the soundness of the doctrine, but for the combative tone of the writing." G. H. Vallins, who died in 1956, is widely known for his many lively books on English. He frequently lectured, and parodies by him often appeared in Punch. Formerly Senior English Master at Selhurst Grammar School, Croydon, he became Principal of one of the Ministry of Education's training colleges for teachers in Liverpool, and was for a year Headmaster of a large school there.
