Science
Glassmaking is one of the oldest technologies, but as late as 1915 most glassmaking was carried on in the traditional craft fashion with little understanding of the chemistry and physics involved and with successful formulas and methods jealously guarded as trade secrets. Since that time, a rational technology of glass has emerged, with a corresponding increase in the quality, uniformity, and versatility of the product. Glass technologists now design glasses with properties thought alien to the very nature of glass.
