Selling more than 100,000 copies since first publication in 1984, EXPLORING CORPORATE STRATEGY is widely recognised as Europe's bestselling strategy text. Gerry Johnson and Kevan Scholes bring together the underlying concepts, analytical methods, processes of development and problems of corporate strategy, enabling readers to understand the role of corporate strategy within a variety of organisations, and providing guidance in the formulation and implementation of strategy. EXPLORING CORPORATE STRATEGY views corporate strategy in two ways - economic analysis and planning, and organisational decision making within a social, political and cultural process.
The text takes a strongly European/international approach, with more than 60 company illustrations, contributed from the UK, France, Holland, Denmark, Italy and the USA.
In the third edition, Gerry Johnson and Kevan Scholes present a fuller account of strategy development processes and value chain concepts. They present a critique of Porter's generic strategies and a market-led framework for considering generic strategies. There is a more integrated treatment of the cultural context of strategy and more specific attention is paid to the problems and means of managing strategic change. The chapters on culture, power and process of strategy formulation and change reflect the growing importance of these issues in the study of strategy.
Teaching and learning aids in the text include schematic diagrams of key frameworks, introductions to each part of the book, and end of chapter work assignments (at three levels of difficulty to give maximum flexibility in their use), references and key readings.
