HISTORY
A colorful account of our fiftieth state: its people and traditions
Clearly in love with the iand his ancestors came to in 1828, Gerrit P. Judd tells the story of the islands of Hawaii from the time of the Tahitian migration about a thousand years ago to the tourist migration of the present day. He describes the early religion and taboo system, the impact of Captain Cook's arrival in 1778 followed by western trading ships, and he re-evaluates the highly controversial role of the missionaries who arrived in the early nineteenth century and dominated the government of the islands during the power struggle between England and France for a colonial empire. In our own era, Hawaii was brought sharply to the attention of every American by the attack on Pearl Harbor, December 7, 1941. Soon, the island territory became noted for the loyalty and heroism of her Nisei troops who fought for the United States in Italy and France.

Admitted to the Union in 1959, Hawaii was soon filled with tourists from the mainland, eager to visit the new state. Enjoying the climate, the incomparable scenery, and the rich traditions which Professor Judd evokes in his absorbing book, they, and the readers, quickly learn the meanings of "aloha": hello, good-by, and love.
