When the name "Louvre" is
mentioned we think, perhaps
of the Mona Lisa, of an unsur-
passed collection of nineteenth
century French painting or of
this or that favourite picture
or piece of sculpture. Above
all we think of a vast building
overflowing with the treasures
of centuries. But museums are
not warehouses and collections
do not form themselves. Each
painting bought or acquired
by conquest or legacy has a
story — each has a political
or social overtone. Wars devel-
