The archetype of the neglected gen-
ius, torn by inner conflicts, unstable
by temperament, Van Gogh created
masterpiece after masterpiece of
blinding radiance in his last five
years, and sold one. The story of his
lifelong rejection, his quarrel with
Gauguin, his madness, is among the
most tragic in art annals; but his
achievement survives in works of ex-
traordinary power and brilliance —
testaments both to his vision and his
suffering.
Ninety-one of Van Gogh's paint-
ings are included in this book — all
reproduced in full color — tracing
his development from early studies
of peasants in the Brabant, through
the revelation that brightened the
colors on his palette, to his amazing
late works at Aries, Saint-Rémy and
Auvers-sur-Oise. An informative in-
