Commercial banking worldwide and especially in the US, has fallen on hard times. The "wholesale" banking industry in America — that part of the industry that serves corporations as opposed to individuals — is in the same position as the oil industry in the early 1980s: namely, chronic overcapacity, leading to price wars, thin margins, and thus clearly inadequate returns on banks' increasingly risky loan portfolios.

The articles are preceded by a Roundtable discussion looking at "The Future of Commeraal Banking".
Divided into major sections the book covers
• Strategic bank management issues
• Asset securitization (whicln has been proposed as a solution to overcapacity)
• Risk management,(both in terms of bank management and as a prbdyct for corporate clients)
• The role of banks in corporate capital raising
• Public policy issues centering on bank regulation
Addressing the issues of how banks are to restore adequate levels of profitability and giving incisive insights into the causes of the present situation (from contributors who are among the most eminent analysts and commentators in finance today . . . ) the book will be an essential text for bankers, corporate finance officers, and students of finance and banking.
Donald Chew was a founding partner of Stern Stewart and is Editor-in-Chief of the Continental Bank's Journal of Applied Corporate Finance. Vissza
