The Economist Intelligence Unit was formed in 1947 by the Economist Newspaper Ltd, to provide the information, analysis and advice required by a business world just beginning lo wake up to the fact that the post-war environment was going to be significantly different from the pre-war one. In the 25 years since it started the EIU's work has been concerned with very many branches of economic and social affairs in most countries. The nature of its practical work for business and government clients has, we believe, given the E1U a unique practical insight into current problems and conditions.
In this book seven authors, all but one connected with the work of the EIU in one way or another, take seven topics, describe how they have changed over the past twenty-five years, and take a speculative look at how they may develop over the next twenty-five.
As the EIU's foundation coincided with the start of the world monetary system elaborated at Bretton Woods, and 1972 has witnessed the foundering of that system, it is appropriate that the first essay should deal with this; subsequently the production and world-wide marketing of food is considered, and the growing economic power of certain parts of the underdeveloped world is set in the context of the ownership and exploitation of oil resources, leading to the question "Will the third world ever take off?" An essay on the technological explosion is followed by one that seeks to describe the planners' dilemma and the way this once narrow field is expanding to take in a large number of other disciplines. The book concludes with an original contribution on management from Robert Heller.
In this uncertain world, the essays cannot provide a blue print for 1997, but we believe that the reader will be left with some valuable pointers to the environment twenty-five years hence. Vissza
