A magnificent library of monographs dedicated to presenting the work of the greatest painters, sculptors and architects of all time. Each volume, based on the latest research, is written by a leading authority, and contains a biography, a critical appraisal of the work, and fully documented notes on each plate.
One of the greatest artists connected with the Impressionist group, Degas came of a sufficiently wealthy family to be able to devote himself to painting from early manhood. He learned more from his study of Ingres and the Renaissance masters than from his formal training, but even in his early portraits his individual tonal sense and virtuosity in draughtsmanship are clearly evident. During the 1860s he became influenced by Manet, learning from him a new feeling for colour and a freer handling, and in due course he became acquainted with those admirers of Manet who were to develop the ideas of Impressionism. Though he never wholeheartedly accepted the Impressionist doctrines, Degas adapted some of them to his own purposes. His subject-matter was mostly drawn from contemporary life - especially the theatre, ballet rehearsals and the racecourse. In rendering such scenes he combined the intentionally casual method of composition used by the Impressionists with his own uncanny powers of realistic observation. Degas' ability to grasp and convey the crucial moment in a scene of swift movement remains unparalleled and is apparent in all his paintings, even in those late works in which he invests new themes (a woman drying her hair, or ironing clothes) with a monumental grandeur of composition.
