About this Book
Many legends have been woven around Gauguin's life and character. Who was. this man who left everything he possessed—wife, children, career and country—to live in poverty on one of the most isolated Pacific islands? Where did his genius spring from, and was he really the artist of inflexible will that his biographers depict? At the age of thirty-five Gauguin gave up his job on the Paris Stock Exchange to devote his full time and energy to painting. From then on he spent a restless life moving between Paris, Brittany, Martinique, Panama, Tahiti and the Marquesas.
He alsó spent a disastrous two months in Arles with Van Gogh who, in a fit of insanity, threatened him with a razor. Yet in spite of his restlessness, poverty, ill-health and continual quarrels with the colonial author-ities in the South Sea Islands, Gauguin produced works which were to be the main source and inspiration of many twentieth-century artists. Gauguin rejected the natural-istic representation of the Impressionists, together with the whole of Western civilization, which he believed to be corrupted by materialism, and set himself to express the ideas, moods and emotions of the primitive and un-spoiled peoples. The author of this book throws new light on Gauguin's enigmatic and stormy character, and at-tempts to resolve the mysteries that persist. He reveals a man whose perseverance and dedication to his calling survived all opposition and discouragement, and who in the end succeeded in realising the work he set out to do.
Boudaille was born in Francé in 1925. After a childhood spent in Reims and Cannes he went to Paris, as a journalist, in 1946. Since then he has worked on numerous leading art journals in Francé as an art critic and has written several introductions to volumes of drawings by Pignon and Picasso, including Toros y toreros (Thames and Hudson L9 9s).
