Gaikjuin spent much of his life in extreme poverty, having chosen to abandon a banking career and live among so-called primitive people in the South Seas the better to pursue his unique artistic vision. The paucity of the materials he used reflect his circumstances — his paint surfaces were often thin because he had inadequate supplies of paint, and many of his greatest works were painted on rough, unprimed hessian. But this suited his ideas and way of working — he rejected an appearance of false polish — and he made a virtue of it, sometimes thinning his paint even further with wax to produce a smooth, matt surface. His glowing, vibrant colours were produced by subtle variations of hue, not by thick impastes, and he gave extra emphasis to forms and areas of colour by outlining them with dark Prussian blue, dark green or red, so that his paintings have a rich, enamel-like effect.
The selection of paintings shown here traces Gauguin's development from his early Impressionist beginnings to the full flowering of his art, exemplified by works such as Nevermore and Where Do We Come From? In the text, the author outlines the major events in his life and explains the important inlluences on his work, both social and artistic. Vissza
