The reader is holding the story of the Ottoman Pécs in their hands. The Christian contemporaries thought this period was a decline, however, the Muslim authors regarded Pécs as an earthly paradise, the Garden of írem. The title of the book reveals the author's opinion on the question. On the pages of the book, a most exciting and colourful city emerges which became enriched with more and more Balkanian elements in the shadow of the crescent, but one of the strongest Christian communities of the Ottoman Hungary could alsó prosper within its walls. This duality became obvious by the co-ecistence of the bell ringing and the muezzins' calls, the clocktowers reflecting the Christian time conception and the silhouette of the mosque bearing the name of Kasim bey. Nevertheless, of the two the noon bell has proved to be lasting. Kasim and his successors became forgottén during the centuries.
