PREFACE
This book contains the general reports, presentations and discussions of the International Conference of Stability of Steel Structures, which was held in Budapest, Hungary, on April 25-27, 1990.
This was the third international conference organized in Hungary, the previous ones being held in Balatonfüred in 1977 and in Tihany in 1986. They were initiated by the late Professor Ottó Halász, and it was great pleasure for us to continue his work to pay tribute to the memory of this outstanding scholar and very good man.
The objectives of the 1990 conference like the other two were to summarize the progress in theoretical and experimental research in the stability of steel (and other metal) structures, special emphasis being given to new concepts of analysis, design rules and recommendations in recent national and international Design Specifications and Codes.
One hundred and seventy three papers have been contributed by European, American, Asian and Japanese engineers and researchers concerned with a wide range of applications of stability problems.
The book is divided according to fifteen thanes. Each theme is introduced by a general report which reviews the problems and results of the theme generally, analyzing, evaluating and grouping them. The order of the papers was determined by the person in charge of the general report.
Apart from the significant financial and other support by the Technical University of Budapest and the Hungarian Academy of
