HUNGÁRIÁN PAINTING IN THE TWENTIETH CENTURY The author, Gábor Ö. Pogány, is the General Director of the Hungárián National Gallery and an outstanding art histórián, critic and aesthetician. He here presents a survey of the development of Hungárián painting since the close of the last century. His study covers the origins of the most recent artistic endeavours in Hungary and the influence of modern trends on Hungárián painters, analyzing the factors which imbued the generál European current with its peculiarly national character and made it the means of expressing the Hungárián landscape and temperament. The present book documents the valuable contribution made by Hungárián painting towards the advance of European culture. It makes clear the degree to which Hungárián painters adopted and adapted many of the achievements of the revol útion in style that took place in Europe, assisted in spreading the knowledge of modern trends among their compatriots and thus indirectly helped to...
