Although Leibniz's writing forms an enormous corpus, no single work stands as a canonical expression of his whole philosophy, in addition, the wide range of Leibniz's work—letters, published papers, and fragments on a variety of philosophical, religious, mathematical, and scientific questions over a fifty-year period—heightens the challenge of preparing an edition of his writings in English translation from the French and Latin.

The goal of Professors Ariew and Garber in preparing this new edition has been to collect, translate, and annotate a selection of Leibniz's philosophical works that, as a whole, gives an accurate picture of his mature philosophical thought. Along with new translations of standard texts, Ariew and Garber have included a selection of lesser-known pieces of his mature thought dealing with his program for logic, his various accounts of contingency and freedom, and his account of body. Ariew and Garber have been sensitive as well to the importance of presenting the thought of Leibniz within its historical context. Thus they include a generous selection of Leibniz ^writings about other philosophers: Hobbes, Descartes, Spinoza, Malebranche, Locke, Berkeley and Newton. These selections enrich our understanding of Leibniz immeasurably by allowing us to see the contrasts he draws between his thought and that of his contemporaries. Vissza
