ALAN C. VEDDER moved to Santa Fe from the East Coast more than a quarter of a centmy ago. Because of his interest in architectural and artistic fields, despite only general formal education in those areas, he quickly developed a fascination for New Mexican culture. A few years later, these interests were expanded and intensified when he began working with the late E. Boyd in the newly-established Spanish Colonial Department of the Museum of New Mexico. He worked closely with her for almost 20 years and together they explored, empirically, the Spanish cultural background of New Mexico. Mr. Vedder has specialized in conservation of New Mexican Spanish Colonial objects, having conserved the famous Santiago bulto at El Santuaiio de Chimayo and the altar screens at Rosario Chapel in Santa Fe and at Santa Cruz Church in Espanola. He has acted as a consultant to various museums including the American Museum in Britain at Bath, England, for which he collected, designed and installed their permanent exhibit of New Mexican rooms. Dedicated to all aspects of New Mexico's Spanish Colonial culture, one of Mr. Vedder's goals is to further the appreciation of traditional New Mexican furniture.
"Readers interested in Spanish lore will find the FURNITURE OF SPANISH NEW MEXICO of much significance."
—The El Paso Times
"Mr. Vedder's deep appreciation for this subject is clearly seen in this well-illustrated book. It is nicely presented, handsome and unpretentious. There are approximately 100 photographs, which are precise and easy to 'read,' by David Donoho, the noted Laura Gilpin and others." —El Palacio
"It's really a very fine book, this one, and fills a reference need for authentic information. Things to look for in construction, as well as warning signals on supposedly old pieces, are all here." —The New Mexican
"Featuring a great number of black and white photographs by David Donoho, FURNITURE OF SPANISH NEW MEXICO is a must for aficionados of native crafts and lovers of antiques, especially antiques of the Southwest."
—Albuijuerque !oumal
'This book should aid collectors and preservators of New Mexican handmade furniture of the period 1776 to 1900. The many pictures by David Donoho along with detailed descriptions of each piece help define the various styles of furniture, and the construction techniques used to create them." —Books of the Southwest
