Előszó

Volumes 1 through 21 have information printed on the front covers, spiné, and title pages that make it easy to find the articles you want to read. • Volume numbers are printed in all three places in Volumes 1 through 21. • Letter breaks - ^ - are printed in all three places in Volumes 1 through 21. The letters above the line DIA are the first three letters of the first article title in the volume. The letters below the line are the first three letters of the last article title in the volume. • Page breaks - are printed on the spines and title pages of Volumes 1 through 21. They provide the page numbers of the first and last text pages in the volume. Articles are arranged alphabetically by title in Volumes 1 through 21. Most titles are printed in BOLD-FACE CAPITAL letters. Somé titles are printed in even larger letters. • Somé titles are not article titles, but refer you to the actual article title. Within articles you will find See or See alsó other article names for further information. All of these references to other articles are called cross-references. • Most article titles are followed by a phonetic pronunciation. Use the Pronunciation Guide on page vi of Volume 1 to learn the correct pronunciation of the article title. • At the end of most articles are two sets of initials. The first set identifies the person who wrote the article. The second set identifies the special consultant who checked the article for accuracy. All of these people are listed by their initials and full names and position on pages v and vi of Volume 1. • 51 This symbol at the end of an article indicates that there is a project based on the subject of the article in the Projects, Bibliography & Index volume. The project is found under its article title, and all of the project article titles are arranged alphabetically on pages 1 through 64 of the Projects, Bibliography & Index volume. The Projects, Bibliography & Index Volume contains three sections. Each is an essential part of the encyclopedia. • Projects based on articles in the encyclopedia are found in the first section. Each is both entertaining and educational. Each is designed for use by a student and for parental participation if desired. • Bibliography reading lists in the second section list books under generál scientific categories that are alsó titles of major articles. Each book listed is marked with either a YA (Young Aduit) or J (Juvenile) reading level indicator. YA generally applies to readers at the junior high level or higher. J applies to readers at grade levels below junior high school. • Index entries for all article titles plus many subjects that are not article titles are found in the third section Instructions on using the Index are found at the start of the Index section in the Projects, Bibliograohv & Index volume. * J Vissza
