FUNDAMENTALS OF
HUMÁN SEXUALITY
Herant A. Katchadourian, M.D. and Donald T. Lunde, M.D.
Without moralizing or mystification, free of the coyness, the preaching, and the misinformation that have seriously flawed previous popular literature on sexual behavior, Fundamentals of Humán Sexuality provides explicit, detailed, and, above all, accurate answers to the full rangé of sex-related questions. "I know of no other book on humán sexuality that matches it in clarity, cogency, and dependability of in-formation," wrote Dr. Dávid M.
Dávid M. Hamburg in his foreword to the volume and, indeed, readers consulting it will find this the definitive treat-ment of the subject—an invaluable aid, a re-liable reference work.
Written in language that is both accessible and relevant to the generál reader, Fundamentals of Humán Sexuality draws on the latest research done in clinical medicine as well as in the biological and social sciences. While it offers a comprehensive discussion of sexual stimuli and sexual techniques, Fundamentals is no mere sex manual. It is equally inclusive and thorough in its handling of such subjects as pregnancy, contraception, and abortion; the physiology of orgasm and the problem of im-potence; the symptoms, treatment, and pre-vention of sexual disorders—from venereal dis-eases to cervical cancer—for which it provides the most specific diagnostic information cur-rently available to the nonprofessional. Such controversial questions as sexual variance and deviations are viewed with a sensitive aware-ness of shifting social and medical attitudes even as the sexual practices involved are can-didly and explicitly described. The result is a balanced, open treatment of subjects that have for too long been shrouded in myth and fear.
Because Fundamentals is intended as an anti-dote to the groundless generalizations and dis-tortions that still pervade discussions of sex, it

offers—in addition to sound information about the body, its functions and reactions—a per-spective on sexual behavior that includes cul-tural differences and historicai variations. A full chapter is devoted to the interaction of morality and sexual behavior, while others ex-amine eroticism in art, literature, and film. To-gether, they round out the multifaceted picture of sexuality in man.

Lunde is Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at the Stanford University School of Medicine. For twelve years, Dr. Lunde has been a member of a Stanford University research group that is studying the effects of sex hormones on behavior.
