The eighty Hungárián pieces in the volume were smuggled out of Hungary and have been translated and published in seven languages. Freely adapted here by Americans, the poems speak eloquently of the courage and determination of a suppressed people. In this first English-language edition are eighteen originál tributes to the Revolution by such distinguished American poets as e. e. cummings, Sámuel French Morse, and John Ciardi. Written by political prisoners, by young men who íought and died during the street fighting, by somé who stayed in Hungary and remain anonymous, and by those who were forced into exile, the poems describe, sometimes bitterly, sometimes tenderly, but always movingly, the suffering of the spirit and the body under repression.
