"If there's one person who's going to help define antitrust law for the 21st century, it's Gary Reback."
The essence of capitalism is that free and open competition is good for the public, leading to better goods at lower prices. But the benefits of a free market do not come free. Competition must be nurtured and protected by the government, as Americans first discovered more than a century ago during another turbulent era driven by technological change.

As Gary Reback explains in this eye-opening book, we now face a situation almost as dire as the late nineteenth century, when giant railroad and oil trusts destroyed competition and hurt consumers. Congress responded with the earliest antitrust laws to govern the interactions between a business, its competitors, and its customers. A consensus gradually emerged: government had a legitimate role to play in our capitalist system to safeguard the public from unchecked corporate power.
But starting about thirty years ago, a group of conservative law professors and economists argued that interference with the unfettered free market actually ends up hurting consumers. These proponents of the Chicago School argued for much more limited antitrust rules, while trusting companies to be self-policing and markets to be self-correcting. Starting with the Reagan years, this group has dominated antitrust policy—with disastrous results. Vissza
