EACH ONE TEACH ONE" The Laubach Way to Reading series The Laubach Way to Reading series is a basic reading and writing course for aduit and teenage students. Even students with little or no reading experience can begin learning with success from the very first lesson. The Laubach Way to Reading is a revision of the New Streamlined English Series, which grew out of the late Dr. Frank C. Laubach's 40 years of pioneering work in literacy education. This revised series continues to use the distinctive method he developed to teach reading. The Laubach series has been used successfully by thousands in volunteer tutoring and aduit basic education programs, public schools, prisons, and libraries. Their experience has contributed to this revision. Learning by association The "Laubach method" starts with the known-the spoken word-and moves to the unknown-the written word-in easy steps that elicit the correct response from the student and reinforce it immediately. The emphasis is on learning by association rather than by rote memory. Sequential and structured The series teaches basic reading and writing skills in a sequential and structured way. The learner progresses from the sounds and regular spellings of the consonants to those of the short vowels, the long vowels, and finally to irregular spellings and more difficult reading and writing skills. Sound-symbol relationships are taught in charts with key words for a sound and spelling. The key words appear in meaningful context in a story following each chart. Each lesson continues with review of previous material, dictation, writing practice, and homework. The basic lesson structure remains very much the same throughout the series, giving both students and teachers a consistent pattern to follow. The Laubach Way to Reading series has four skill books and four correlated readers. Both the student books and the accompanying teacher's manuals are necessary to provide the comprehensive basic reading program, which includes vocabulary building, phonics, structural analysis, comprehension, and study skills. Writing exercises reinforce reading concepts and develop spelling skills. Detailed teacher's manuals Both English-speaking and ESOL students can use the skill books, but their teachers use different manuals Teachers of English-speaking students use the Laubach Way to Reading manuals. Teachers of ESOL (English for speakers of other languages) use the Laubach Way to English manuals, which provide instruction in conversation skills as well as reading and writing. The detailed step-by-step instructions in the manuals make it possible for both teachers and volunteer tutors to use the series with ease and confidence. Literacy and ESOL workshops Tutor training workshops in both literacy and ESOL are available through local councils affiliated with Laubach Literacy's volunteer membership organization in the United States and Canada. Skill Book 2 Skill Book 2: Short Vowel Sounds teaches the short vowel sounds; the sound for ar; the sound for er, ur, and ir; and the sounds for certain consonant letter combinations. Simple skills of punctuation, structural analysis, and comprehension are alsó introduced. In the writing lessons, the student learns to write sentences. The correlated reader, City Living, introduces additional words, which are listed in the back of the reader. Lessons 14 and 15 teach the correlated reader.
