KLIMT
(1862-1918)
The Austrian painter Gustav Klimt is closely associated with the artistic and philosophical revolution that took place in Vienna at the turn of the century. As the first president of the Secession, he spearheaded a new emphasis on Symbolism, while continuing to develop the Art Nouveau style which influenced so much of European decorative art during the late nineteenth century. Shocking in their day, his vibrant and dreamlike pictures have now become widely popular.
The son of a goldsmith, Klimt first came to public notice as a designer of murals and ceilings and seemed destined for a career as a conventional academic painter-decorator. By the early 1890s, however, he was beginning to rebel against conservative tradition in his exploration of Impressionist techniques and of subjects considered blatantly erotic. Having joined with other like-minded artists to form the Secession, he proved an important mentor for younger painters such as Schiele and Kokoschka.... Tovább

Having joined with other like-minded artists to form the Secession, he proved an important mentor for younger painters such as Schiele and Kokoschka.
Although the works he produced in response to official commissions provoked widespread criticism and accusations of pornography, Klimt continued to enjoy the patronage of many rich Viennese families and was able to earn a living by painting a series of exquisite female portraits. It is for these and for his rich allegorical pictures that he is best known today; but in his later years he also produced a number of landscapes which display the same mosaic-like qualities that can be seen in his subject work.
In this book Françoise Ducros provides a detailed and perceptive analysis of Klimt's life and career, which highlights the major influences on his work, from Byzantine ornament to Japanese prints. The forty-eight full-page colour plates cover a period of over three decades and include several pictures found uncompleted in his studio when he died. Taken as a whole, this superb collection reveals the diversity of Klimt's talents. In the Impressionistic subtlety of The Pear Tree we can see the unassuming seeker after artistic truth; in the golden geometric brilliance of The Kiss, that blending of emotion with decoration which is his lasting legacy.
