This reference book describes several hundred reactions which involve the attachment of one carbon atom bearing a functional group to a carbon skeleton. In Volume 1 hydroxymethylation, the Mannich reaction, formylation, carboxylation, and cyanation deserve special mention.
The "Formation of Carbon-Carbon Bonds" comprises three volumes. They provide the organic chemist with a condensed treatise of C-C coupling reactions which includes formula schemes, a brief text, tables, and the key references. Emphasis is on the construction of carbon
skeletons. The reactions are classified according to the following sequence rules:
— Increasing oxidation state of the generated functions;
— sequential order: halogen, oxygen, sulfur, nitrogen and other heteroatoms entering the reaction;
— hybridization sp', sp', sp of the carbon atoms and of their substituents involved in the reaction.
