Hungarian folk art appears exotic when compared to the art of other European peoples, every branch of it—music, dancing, handicrafts etc.—will be of interest to people abroad. Ancient traditions and the imagination of the people have made this still flourishing art what it is today. Ivor Sándor Kiss, Secretary of the Folk Art Council, and Károly Gink, an artist with the camera, present living folk art in an album that will delight its old admirers and excite readers who have so far had little knowledge of this rich world of beauty. Ivor Sándor Kiss, Secretary of the Folk Art Council, and Károly Gink, an artist with the camera, present living folk art in an album that will delight its old admirers and excite readers who have so far had little knowledge of this rich world of beauty. In this volume the objects appear in their natural environment. The various pieces are made, worn or used right before our eyes, and we see them as the creations of men who know how to realize the full potentialities of their material. The girl from Hövej making lace seems to create not only flowers out of her thread, but to be strumming out a soft song on the strings of a lute. Folk-tales and humour, a quiet rustic house and the savage fire-dance of Busó masques follow each other. In fine lace, heavy clay and hard bone creative hands conjure up the flowers of imagination inspired by nature. This is living folk art, and not just a series of objects taken out of their environment. That is what makes this rich and varied album so enjoyable. Vissza
