"Lope is one of the great, the really great, and the time may he at hand when that fact will be recognized everyivhere. Miss Booty is to he congratulated. No one has done more than she to help Lope along in the Anglo-Saxon countries." eric bentley
It is indeed remarkable that until now a playwright whose reputation places him among the handful of the world's greatest dramatists should not be widely-available in modern, readable English.
Lope (1562-1635) was the founder of the basic dramatic formula which all later dramatists of the Spanish Golden Age were to employ. Lope (1562-1635) was the founder of the basic dramatic formula which all later dramatists of the Spanish Golden Age were to employ. In his stimulating Introduction, Mr. Pring-Mill compares Lope's work with Calderon's (1600-1681), the other major dramatist of the Golden Age. He also discusses the influence of the age on each dramatist and inevitably compares Elizabethan drama to the Spanish.
The plays included represent the most interesting of the different types that Lope wrote. Peribdnez, Fuenteovejuna, and The Knight from Olmedo are historical plays; The Dog in the Manger is a "cloak and dagger" play; and Justice without Revenge is a novelesque play based on Italian prose fiction.
Jill Booty's prose translations are "acting versions" and yet, as the editor points out, they are fresh and vivid and "far more true to the spirit of his plays than any studiously scholarly rendering of their literal meaning."
