Does anybody in this day and age really care about the Rosary? Isn't it just another obsolete pietistic practice which Christians have outgrown? Absolutely not! says J. Neville Ward in this unusual collection of meditations that offer an entirely new approach to the Rosary. For though the saying of the Rosary is no longer the popular devotion it once was, nevertheless the themes it represents continue to speak to all Christians in their daily-life problems and experiences. It is time for us to get back to those themes and reflect on their basic meaning for us today.
After a brief description of the traditional use of the Rosary, Mr. Ward probes each of the fifteen mysteries revealing new insights into their timeless value to men of all ages. Thus, a reflection on the sorrowful themes
(continued on back jiap)
(continued from front flap)
brings to mind the elements of fear, pain, loneliness, humiliation, and death
— very real elements in our own existence — while a consideration of the joyful and glorious mysteries points to the desirability and necessity of faith, hope, and love in the Christian life. What Mr. Ward stresses throughout is the abundant spiritual sustenance provided by mere reflection on the Rosary themes—a far cry, indeed, from the old practice of "saying the beads." Five for Sorrow, Ten for Joy is of particular interest because it is written by a Methodist minister who believes the mysteries of the Rosary are for all Christians. This unique book of meditations offers refreshing, new thoughts on the enduring message of the Rosary
— all in contemporary, relevant terms.
J. Neville Ward was educated at Kings-wood School, Bath, England, of which he is now one of the governors. Ordained a minister in 1938, he is a member of the Faith and Order Committee of the Methodist Church. Mr. Ward is also the author of The Use of Praying and How to Fray.
