FIRST CERTIFICATE ENGLISH AN INTERMEDIATE COURSE FOR CAMBRIDGE CERTIFICATE Book1 Language and Composition The main purpose here is to teach students to write acceptable English and to develop the fluent use of active vocabulary. Accordingly the vocabulary load is relatively light and the emphasis in the texts is on words commonly used and confused rather than on passive lexical items. Each chapter contains a text in which a main structural item and somé secondary items are presented and intensively used. Fowler has for many years taught English as a foreign language to students at all levels, specialising in Cambridge examination classes. He is at present working at the British Institute, Barcelona.
